Fic Recommendations

Hey y'all.

I've been craving some good Check Please fics lately, but have had a bit of a struggle finding them. I'm sorta looking for something largely in-universe, in character, maybe longer... 30k+ words. Honestly, most of these are very loosey-goosey. I just want some real good fic stuff going on.

Anyone have any favorites to share?

In case you haven't already tried it, here's an AO3 search for fics of that length that are complete and in English, which gives a mere 73 works so is easy to skim through. Many of them are AU, but there are a few in-universe ones there.

The two real stars of long-form fic in this fandom are Maybe I'm Waking Up by Idrilka, and Something Like This by Emmagrant01. They're both Zimbits AUs where The Kiss never happened, that imagine Year 3 differently; I enjoyed them both, though Maybe I'm Waking Up features an involuntary outing, and Something Like This made me a little uncomfortable with its use of real-life people and events.

Seconding staranise's comments. I loved like 95% of Something Like This, though.

If you're a Kent Parson fan, I adore fozmeadows' Scar Tissue (That I Wish You Saw). It's Kent/OMC but also Kent/happiness, and has some of the best OCs (and funniest dialogue) I've ever read, which is why I'm reccing it even though it's a WiP. Jack and Bitty are minor characters in this one, but there's some really touching scenes between Jack and Kent that I thought were handled well. (Warning for involuntary outing though.)

My favourite hot-off-the-press story is until your father's at the table by the_one_that_fell. Slow burn Zimbits AU set ten years post-canon, from the premise that Jack and Bitty didn't get together in 2015, drifted apart, then found each other again. Maybe that makes it a little OOC, but it's an absolutely marvelous meditation on love and friendship and aging.

Some good ones mentioned above, but my favorite canonical long-form story is the Actually, I Do Make The Rules series by Jenroses on Ao3, featuring supportive Bittles, and Jack and Bitty navigating their coming out, and just general ensemble awesomeoness.

if you'd care to peruse my bookmarks on ao3 (same handle as here) you can filter for characters, pairings, etc. I'd say I'm heavy on the zimbits and nurseydex with a bit of parse-positive bookmarks. I am also very fond of what I'm writing, too, so feel free to read my stories too if they strike your fancy.
